How Can SYMLIN Help Me?

Changes you may see

When you start taking SYMLIN, you may notice several changes — or just a few. Here are some of the more common ones.

Changes in blood sugar levels after meals
SYMLIN can help lower your blood sugar levels after meals. Over time, SYMLIN can also help improve your A1C. However, when you first start taking SYMLIN, your blood sugar levels may not be where you want them to be.

Be sure to check your blood sugar levels and share the results with your healthcare provider. It may be that the two of you will need to adjust your mealtime insulin doses a few times to get your blood sugar to stay at the right level.

Feeling full sooner and eating less
When you start taking SYMLIN, you may notice that you feel full sooner than you used to at mealtimes. This is one of the ways SYMLIN works to control blood sugar. If you don't feel full sooner, that is okay. SYMLIN is still working.

You may also find that you are eating smaller portions or not wanting second helpings. Or you may not snack as much as you used to. Over time, these changes may help you lose weight.

Nausea
When first starting on SYMLIN, some people will have nausea. If this occurs, it will most likely happen during the first few weeks after starting SYMLIN or when you increase your dose. In most cases it is mild and does not last long. To help reduce the chance of nausea, be sure to start on a low dose of SYMLIN. If nausea does not go away, or if it bothers you, call your healthcare provider. Your provider can suggest ways to manage the nausea.

If you have any concerns or questions about how SYMLIN is working, talk with your healthcare provider. But remember, try to be patient and let SYMLIN do its job. Before long you should see results!

SYMLIN is an injectable medicine for adults with type 2 and type 1 diabetes to control blood sugar. It is always used with insulin to help lower blood sugar during the 3 hours after meals. SYMLIN is used with insulin to lower blood sugar but your blood sugar may drop too low (severe hypoglycemia), especially if you have type 1 diabetes. You must use SYMLIN exactly as prescribed. Nausea is the most common side effect with SYMLIN. When you start taking SYMLIN, it is important to follow your healthcare provider's directions. Only your healthcare provider can decide what changes you need to make to your diabetes treatment plan to reduce your chance of very low blood sugar, which is also called severe hypoglycemia. Never mix SYMLIN and insulin.
