In adult patients with diabetes not adequately controlled on mealtime insulin

How SYMLIN May Help

Diabetes is a complex disorder that involves multiple hormones, including amylin and insulin. To understand the benefits of SYMLIN® (pramlintide acetate) injection, it’s important to first learn about the human hormone amylin.

The role of amylin

In addition to other hormones including insulin, the pancreas also produces a hormone called amylin. These hormones work together to help regulate blood sugar levels.

Amylin works by:

  • Slowing down how quickly the stomach empties, slowing the appearance of sugar in your blood.
  • Suppressing the release of glucagon, a hormone that triggers the liver to make sugar, when it's not needed.
  • Helping reduce the amount of food you eat by balancing feelings of fullness after meals.*

*SYMLIN is not a weight-loss product. Individual results may vary.

Insulin works by:

  • Moving sugar from your blood into cells to be used for energy.

Both amylin and insulin are released at the same time when blood sugar levels are high, usually following a meal. In type 1 and type 2 diabetes, amylin levels may be low, leading to a buildup of sugar in the blood.

What SYMLIN may offer you

If your healthcare provider believes that your mealtime insulin therapy is not controlling your blood sugar well enough, adding SYMLIN may be an option for you. SYMLIN is a man-made version of amylin. It is an injectable prescription medicine that can help lower blood sugar in adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes who use mealtime insulin therapy.

Adding SYMLIN to mealtime insulin may help with diabetes management. SYMLIN can cause serious side effects, including severe low blood sugar.

Adding SYMLIN to mealtime insulin may give your body what it needs to help improve your blood sugar control. SYMLIN has been studied in adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes in multiple phase 3 clinical trials (type 1: one 26-week, one 29-week, two 52-week; type 2: one 26-week, one 52-week) that evaluated the efficacy and safety of SYMLIN plus mealtime insulin compared to mealtime insulin alone.
